Unit History

The 11th Infantry Regiment was first constituted on 3 May 1861 in the Regular Army as the 11th Infantry and organized on 20 May 1862 at Fort Independence, Massachusetts. The regiment participated in major campaigns during the American Civil War, including the Peninsula, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Wilderness, and Appomattox campaigns. Following the Civil War, the 11th Infantry served in various posts across the United States and participated in the Indian Wars, the Spanish-American War, and the Philippine Insurrection. During World War I, the regiment was assigned to the 5th Division and saw action in the St. Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne offensives. In World War II, the 11th Infantry fought in the European Theater, including campaigns in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace, and Central Europe.
